Letter from Robert Borrowes, solicitor, Stamp Office, William Street, Dublin, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, reporting that the commissioners of stamps have ordered a suspension of legal proceedings and a remission of penalties in the case of James McGrath, agent to Dillon family, who was accused of passing unstamped receipts. Also letter from Luke McNeal, Rathroe, Elphin, County Roscommon, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, referring to information relayed previously on suspected irregular practices by McGrath; he complains of legal pressure from the landlord and lack of financial recompense for the assistance provided. He recites an allegation against McGrath for handling unstamped receipts on three separate occasions during December 1821, March 1822 and June 1822. |

Claims to have been ‘wounded in the Cheek at Church town in the County of Cork when it was attacked by the Insurgents in the year 1822’ and due to this injury he has difficulty in securing similar employment. Emphasises the needs of his family and mentions a character recommendations from Dr Trench of Ballinasloe, County Galway, Major Darcy and James Daly, the warden [MP] of Galway. Includes memorial from Harrison, Castletown, to Wellesley, seeking a situation in the police under Major George Warburton, chief magistrate, Ennis, County Clare and stressing the loyalty demonstrated by his father and other family members in military service to the crown and his own personal exertions with the revenue department. |

Mentions his personal financial difficulties especially those arising from property bequeathed by his late father which is ‘encumbered with debts and legacies’. Observes the salary of the post of tide surveyor has been reduced to £120 per annum and its duties will entail attention around the clock ‘to board every vessel that comes into Lough Foyle’; also notices that it will require an ‘active young person’ with accommodation to be provided in one of the revenue houses along the shore. |
