Letter from Robert Harding, Derawlin [Derraulin], County Limerick, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting permission to repossess ‘a valuable doubled barreled fowling piece’ forcibly taken along with other items of arms by ‘an armed party of Insurgents’ who attacked his dwelling in the forenoon of the 19 May 1823. He stresses his entitlement to receive the weapon from magistrate Major Maxwell, to whom it was surrendered, on grounds of his having given evidence together with his sisters, in the prosecution of 6 offenders.

Returns memorial from Norris, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting exclusion from a fine imposed for missing jury service on grounds as a deputy post master he is exempt by act of Parliament from such duties. Also returns letter from Sir Edward Smith Lees, secretary, General Post Office, Dublin, to Gregory, reciting the relevant parliamentary act in confirmation that post office officials are not obliged by law to complete jury service.

Letter from Sir Charles William Flint, secretary, Irish Office, London, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, returning letter from William Shaw Mason, secretary, Records Commission, Record Tower, Dublin Castle, conveying expectations that an abstract of the population of Ireland shall be published by the Easter recess; requests that ‘the persons employed in framing it should be paid for what they have already done’ and stresses the ‘value of the work’, the particular labour required in making the compilation as well as the careful economy exercised in its production. Also letter from John Rickman, [12 New] Palace Yard, London, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, reflecting on the nature of labour and various costs associated with the preparation of abstracts of population of England for the census of 1801, 1811 and 1821. Also letter from Mason to Goulburn observing that the ‘principle item in it is the charge for forming the Parliamentary Abstract’ and indicating that he is endeavoring to expedite the process of printing.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Thomas Philip Vokes, police magistrate, Limerick, County Limerick, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, expressing opposition to the grant of further aid to Michael Donovan ‘at least previous to the next assizes where he is bound to prosecute persons charged with an insurrectionary murder’. Also observes ‘It is unnecessary to enter into a report on the several paragraphs of his memorial as some of them are true and some palpably false’. Returns memorial of Donovan, Rathkeale, County Limerick, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting advance of more substantial remuneration for provision of information on regional miscreancy. Claims to have given evidence in prosecution of 5 men ‘who robed [sic] and murdered the post Boy Conveying the Mail from Rathkeale to Shanagolden’ and also claims to have enabled barrister [Thomas] Lloyd of Beechmount to confiscate ‘more than thirty stand of arms’ in 1822. He complains of the limited means afforded him through payment of 10s a week from Vokes and alleges his house was burned and several attempts were made to assassinate him; signed and attested by J Brown and two other magistrates of County Limerick.

Letter from Colonel James Crosbie, MP for County Kerry, Ballyheigue Castle, Tralee, County Kerry, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, expressing support for the application of Baron Ventry [Sir William Townsend Mullins, 2nd Baron Ventry] to have his title changed to that of Baron Burnham. Regrets ‘it has been informed to me that the Lord Lieu[tenan]t has thrown some impediment in the way’ and remarks upon Ventry's loyalty and ‘the powerful weight & influence he has in this County’. Also memorial from Ventry to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting permission to have his title changed to that of Burnham, the name of the estate he inherited in County Kerry. Confides his principle reason for wanting the change is that his present title ‘is obnoxious to a disagreeable & unpleasant interpretation in the Continental languages’.
