Letter from Henry Allen, Greenan Woolen Factory, near Ballinacor College, Rathdrum, County Wicklow, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, recalling acts of past loyalty and seeking restitution for all losses sustained on commercial property as ‘a Suffering Loyalist’. He emphasises his commitment to government in spite of giving public support to Catholic Emancipation. Encloses memorial to Wellesley, outlining application for advance of funds for the reestablishment of his manufacturing concern, destroyed in the 1798 Rebellion [on account of its use as a military barracks]. Also encloses copy affidavit of Joseph Holt, Four Courts Marshalsea, Dublin, [given before magistrate James Blacker] stressing the political integrity of Allen whom is also incarcerated in prison due to indebtedness. Also encloses copy of ‘A Proposal for employing numbers of the Poor, and increasing the Plantation of Forest Trees in Ireland, for the Consideration of Government’. Includes letter from Allen to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, requesting financial assistance in support of his factory and making reference to ‘an old Distillery, and very large Malt Houses, and Dwelling House’ which he may need to sell to Mr Haigh in order ‘to discharge some small Debts I owe’. Also letter from Allen to Goulburn, providing names of several prominent character witnesses including Hugh Howard, ‘formally Colonel of the Wicklow Militia’, Arthur Guiness and Sir Robert Shaw. |
