Letter from Reverend Edward G Hindson, [Church of Ireland clergyman], Glenville, County Cork, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, expressing disappointment at his failing to secure appointment as rector of parish of Ardnageehy, a living which his father helped establish. He remarks his father also took steps to appease the Roman Catholic population of the neighbourhood by making a gift of land to them and subscribing ‘£100 towards building their Chapel’. Declares an interest in accepting the parish of Castlehaven, a place that has seen sharp conflict over tithe exactions, and indicates a desire to offer appeasement through giving ‘the entire of my parochial income to relieve the necessities, to educate and to promote the Industry of my Parishioners’. |

Letter from Reverend Henry Lambert Bayly, Church of Ireland rector of the parish of Arklow, Ballyarthur, County Wicklow, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, seeking settlement of a monetary claim by labourers on the mail coach road in the western part of County Wicklow. He stresses the sum claimed by the county grand jury has ‘long since been presented for’. Also reply from Dublin Castle explaining that the crown law advisor has reviewed the case and finds ‘unless the Expenditure and Application of the Money advanced on Account of the said Presentment can be proved by Affidavit of the Contractor or Overseer, the Balance will not be issued’. Also note with opinion of John Sealy Townsend, crown law officer, on application. |
