Petition of John Crowe, Dundalk, County Louth, governor of Dundalk Gaol, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting a situation in the police establishment for his son, Christopher Crowe, who is now 21 years of age. States his son is a person of ‘moral and regular conduct’ and remarks he has gained experience over the past two years as assistant in the jail of Dundalk. Certificate added on base recommending Crowe as suitable person to act in a situation under government from Reverend Robert Hume, inspector and chaplain of Louth County Gaol. Also certificate in his favour from George Forster, visiting magistrate, with countersignature by Mathew Fortescue; also certificate from Thomas Tisdall, [late] sheriff of Louth, applauding the dedication of John Crowe.

Letter from Hugh Logan, late corporal, 93rd regiment of foot, Limerick Post Office, County Limerick, out pensioner of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, enclosing a memorial to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting financial aid to enable himself and family to emigrate to Pictou, in Lower Canada. Claims to have spent 28 years in military service and notes his parents and kin left Scotland some 24 years ago to settle in Lower Canada, 6 February 1825. Also two additional memorials from Logan to Wellesley, emphasising his hope for assistance in order that he might make the journey to join his wider family in Lower Canada; also requests that instructions and recommendations, previously enclosed, be returned to him, 14 January; 14 April 1825.

Letter from Godfrey Fetherston, secretary, Commissioners of Inquiry [Irish courts], 15 Dominick Street, Dublin, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, indicating the commissioners regard as valid an application for redress by Robert Jackson who complains of a practice by the sheriff’s office relating to making payment of bail in person. Returns letter from Jackson, Graigue, near Carlow, County Carlow, to Goulburn, explaining on January 1824 he was given notice to make an appearance before the assistant barrister [Henry Kemmis] of Queen’s County [County Laois; Leix] to answer a demand for payment of a debt of £10; indicates that the matter was set aside but later taken up by the superior court and he was subsequently arrested at his residence. Complains of being obliged to travel a distance of 20 miles to meet the sheriff in order to lodge bail. Seeks redress and suggests some modification be made in the law to avert such inconvenience to the public.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Reverend Charles Sankey, magistrate and Church of Ireland vicar of parish of Shanrahan, County Tipperary, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, reporting that an application from Michael Purdue, police sub constable, for relief from a fine was presented before the bench of magistrates in Clogheen. Comments that the matter ended inconclusively since ‘a difference of opinion’ emerged amongst the magistrates as to the ‘Expediency of remitting the fine’. Returns petition of Purdue [recorded by CSO clerk as William Purdue], Clogheen, County Tipperary, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting release from a monthly fine imposed upon him by the magistrates at Cahir on account of his being ‘overtaken in liquor while on duty’. Complains he is forced to contract debts in order to provide for his family. Emphasises his good behaviour since conviction and refers to exertions in the line of duty, in particular, having overpowered a number of ‘ruffians’ who ambushed him outside Clogheen. With certificate on base confirming that Purdue ‘has conducted himself with attention and Sobriety from the time he was fined’ signed by Sankey and 2 another magistrates.

Letter from Colonel William S Currey, agent to Duke of Devonshire, Lismore Castle, County Waterford, to the Chief Secretary’s Office, Dublin Castle, sending a memorial [not present] requesting an advance of financial aid to assist with the cost of erecting a bridge at Baxter’s Ford, County Cork, over the River Bandon. Refers to the ‘great utility’ of the proposed structure and remarks on the continued support of Richard Griffith, civil engineer overseeing public works schemes, 20 January 1825. Also letter from William Smith Bernard, Bandon, County Cork, provost and chairman of petty sessions, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, reiterating appeal for government financial assistance in completion of the bridge at Baxter’s Ford. Rehearses the various local and economic advantages arising from completion of such an undertaking and the widespread support it enjoys, 30 July 1825. Also draft reply from the CSO to indicate that at present the Lord Lieutenant has ‘no funds at his disposal’ out of which he might make a grant.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Petition of William Moore, late major in the British [military] line, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting appointment to the post of gauging surveyor at the port of Waterford, County Waterford, a position earlier held by his father and grandfather. Indicates, as an alternative, he would accept of the post of chief constable in the police or the position of store keeper at the customs house of Waterford, or any other situation under government. Also refers to his military career which spanned a period of 20 years. Laments by ‘various accidents he has lost all his property’ and is in circumstances of ‘great distress’.

Displays cost of the annuity paid to the late apothecary, ‘Straw for Beds’ and remuneration for servants. Signed by James Hendrick, accountant. Annotation on back from CSO indicating the Chief Secretary’s determination to have included on the accounts expenses for a similar establishment in Cork.
