Petition of John Walsh, Ballymahon, County Longford, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting an investigation of a decision taken by a magistrate of Kilbeggan, County Westmeath [Reverend James Moffet], to release from the gaol of [County] Longford a woman by name of Anne Farell, alias Raftery, who was convicted for passing counterfeit notes. Claims his first encounter with Farell was at the market of the town of Ballymahon, when she paid for his butter with forged money. Continues he traced her to the town of Kilbeggan, where, with the assistance of the chief constable of that place, Mr Martin, and with aid from Owen Dowd, who testified against her, she was committed to jail. Complains that the magistrate released her after a few days in prison and indicates he made complaint to the Lord Chief Justice of King’s Bench [Charles Kendal Bushe] in the hope of receiving redress. |

Remarks another baronial constable, John Cronin, is willing to make an exchange with him. Encloses a certificate from the magistrates of the baronies of Glanarought and Dunkerron, County Kerry, addressed to Major [Richard] Willcocks, general superintendent of police, expressing support for Sullivan’s application to be posted to Kenmare. Signed by Reverend William Godfrey, Church of Ireland rector of Kenmare, Captain Richard Mahony, commander of the yeomanry cops [Kerry], Lieutenant James Hickson and Reverend Denis Mahony, a Church of Ireland clergyman. |

Comments on the poor state of the existing route, particularly on the steep inclines that so much impede the progress of the traveller. Letter from Sir Charles William Flint, secretary, Irish Office, London, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, conveying the opinion of Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary of Ireland, on the application for a new line of road from Clogheen [County Tipperary] to Fermoy, County Cork. States Goulburn’s inclination to put the project on hold for the present, 3 March 1825. Returns letter from Richard Griffiths, civil engineer with charge of public works on the southern district of Ireland, to Gregory, reporting that the proposed road in the region ‘would be most useful’ and recommending a government grant of half the sum required for its completion. Emphasises the usefulness of the road but notes opposition from George King, 3rd earl of Kingston, on grounds that completion of that section of the Arraglyn [Araglyn] road would materially injure his local interests. Anticipates an easing off of opposition to the road and advises the matter be postponed until the following summer assizes, 15 February 1825. Also letter from Captain William Cooke Collis, Castle Cooke, Kilworth, County Cork, magistrate and overseer of the road through the Glen of Arraglyn, County Cork, to Gregory, stressing the necessity of obtaining an advance of money to continue the work on the Arraglyn road. Contends without a government advance, around 300 persons will face unemployment and hardship due to lack of means; encloses copy letter to Goulburn emphasising expenditure on scheme through grand jury presentments and requesting an grant from the Consolidated Fund, 11 May 1825. Also copy of memorandum on the road through the Glen of Arraglyn. |
