TITLE:

Copy memorial of the noblemen, gentlemen and inhabitants of Dublin and vicinity seeking an extension of the quay on the north side to the Phoenix Iron Works and rejuvenation of the area around Barrack Street, Dublin

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Copy memorial of the noblemen, gentlemen and inhabitants of Dublin and vicinity to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, seeking assistance of government for a reconstruction of the district around Barrack Street, Dublin, and enclosing a plan and estimate for same [not present]. Explains they propose to extend the quay on the north side of the river to the Phoenix Iron Works, to enhance the area near the Royal Barracks, and when complete to construct a new bridge [in memory of the visit of King George IV in 1821]. In the process the removal of old dwellings on Barrack Street would be facilitated, a place ‘nearly impassable’ on busy market days and ‘infested with Women of the most abandoned Character, and Public Houses of the lowest description’. Such a material alteration, they observe, would remove the threat of disease to the local army garrison, and put an end to the ‘scenes of Riot, Drunkenness and gross indecency’ displayed for all to see in open daylight on that street. Signed by Thomas Abbott, Lord Mayor of Dublin, and c96 other individuals.
