Letter from Sir Matthew Barrington, [crown solicitor for the Munster circuit], Dublin, to William Lamb, Chief Secretary, outlining his report on enclosed memorial of labourer Michael Meany, New Road, Limerick, outlining the circumstances in which his son Thomas died as a result of a violent assault on 5 February 1825 by Martin and Patt Ryan, and requesting that the perpetrators not be granted bail. Barrington states that the magistrates of the Petty Sessions at O’Brien’s Bridge [County Clare] had applied to [Henry Joy[, Attorney General, to grant bail to the Ryans, but that he submitted Meany’s information to the judges of the King’s Bench, who will now reconsider if bail should be granted. |

Letter from James Palmer and [Maj] BB Woodward, Inspectors General of Prisons, [Inspectors General Office], [41 Leeson Street], Dublin, to William Lamb, Chief Secretary, referring to enclosed letter from Hill W Rowan, Governor of the Richmond General Penitentiary, to Lamb, seeking advice in relation the diet and fasting of Roman Catholic prisoners. State that under the rules of the penitentiary, ‘the term “Established diet” is to be understood as not to interfere with the fasts and abstinences prescribed by the religion of Roman Catholic convicts’. Suggests Rowan consults with the catholic chaplain of the prison to draw up ‘a list of the stated and fixed fast days’, and establish a system where he is given 24 hours’ notice of any other fast days which may be imposed. |
