SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Letter from Dr Edward Trevor, supervisor of convict transportation, Dublin, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, enclosing a receipt from JW Coghill, captain of convict ship 'Mangles', acknowledging embarkation of 190 male convicts for transportation to New South Wales, Australia. Indicates he was given a list by Trevor showing personal details of each convict and also the Lord Lieutenant’s warrant which he will present to the governor of New South Wales [Major General Sir Thomas Makdougall Brisbane]. He confirms that each convict has been supplied with wearing apparel: ‘one cap, one brush, one comb, one towel’ plus ‘thread and needles’. In addition he has taken on board requisites for a ‘School for Convicts on the Voyage’. Countersigned by Christopher Betty [Beatty], keeper of hulk ‘Surprize’, Cove [Cobh], County Cork. |
