Letter from Thomas Burton Vandeleur, Irish circuit judge, Omagh, County Tyrone, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, drawing attention to the large number of impending prosecutions due to be heard at the next assizes of Omagh against persons charged with infringement of revenue statutes. Conveys the clerk of the crown for County Tyrone [John Johnston] expects 90 cases to be heard by the court on that occasion. With annotation on top from Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, stating the same course of action as ordered on an earlier case should be proceeded with. Encloses letter from Reverend Thomas Stack, inspector and chaplain to the gaol of County Tyrone, to Vandeleur, warning of overcrowding in the local jail in the event of mass conviction at assizes. Observes in the present circumstances ‘I don’t think there would be accommodation for more than thirty [illicit] Distillers without very great danger’. |

Petition of Margaret Taylor, widow, Woodcliff, Shanagolden, County Limerick, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting her son, William A Taylor, be appointed as a chief constable in the police establishment of Ireland. States her late husband, John Taylor, lieutenant of the 51st regiment of foot, was killed while serving under the Duke of Wellington [Arthur Wellesley] in November 1813. Continues, another son, also at rank of lieutenant, was wounded in military action with the 12th light dragoons and again while fighting with the 9th regiment of foot; as a result he is now disabled. |

Petition of John Keane, John Taffe [Taaffe], Giles Powell and Laurence Ryan, barony of Owney and Arra, Newport, County Tipperary, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting a free passage to Upper Canada for themselves and their families, comprising a total of 27 persons. States their determined to leave Ireland for British North America, but complains they are excluded from a list of emigrants by Captain Roberts of Charleville, County Cork, on account of not being residents of that county. Appeals for permission to join those departing and makes reference to the official policy of government to aid removal of 2000 emigrants from the south of Ireland. Recites support of key members of the gentry and emphasises their application for free passage has the approval of Reverend John Pennefather. |

Includes letter from Major Thomas D’Arcy, Belfast, County Antrim, inspector general of police for province of Ulster, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, declaring invalid a compliant brought against Beatty by McNestry for an alleged assault on his servant Patrick Laughlin and seizure of 3 walking sticks in his possession, 10 March 1825. Also encloses letter from John Willoughby Cole, 2nd Earl of Enniskillen, chairman of petty sessions, Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, to D’Arcy, reporting that the case brought by McNestry was dismissed on account of failure of Laughlin to appear in court, 28 February 1825. Also encloses case summary signed by Cole and Johnston Hamilton, clerk of petty sessions, Enniskillen, 28 February 1825. Indicates the bridge, which was erected with support of a loan from the Bank of Ireland, is eligible for a portion of the money raised from tax proceeds on the inhabitants of the quays west of Carlisle Bridge [O’Connell Bridge], paid into the hands of the corporation of Dublin. Reveals the debt was reduced by a sum of £160 through payment made on 5 January 1824, leaving an arrears of £500 on 5 January 1825. |

Letter from Alderman Frederick Darley, John Graves and Peter Low, chief magistrates, head office of police, Dublin, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, making recommendation for issue of pension to officers of the police establishment considered unfit, for reasons of old age, poor health or accident, for further police service. Cites the provisions of the 26th section of the act of the 48th of George III, chapter 140, and proposes allocation of pension in accordance with post occupied and time served. Notes that the applicants, Richard McAvick, John Keenan, Richard Woods, John Howley, Henry Slane, John Dougherty and John Hayes, were each examined and approved by James Henthorn, police surgeon, 18 February 1825. Encloses memorial from Slane, watchman, 6th division of police, 4 Denmark Place, Dublin, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, complaining of loss of hearing and injury to his eye received on the night of 19 July 1824 at the hands of a mob, and requesting issue of a pension; attaches copy of affidavit describing the attack made before Sir Garret Neville, magistrate, 4th Divisional Office of police, 1 September; 4 December 1824. Also encloses memorial from Woods, patrol constable, to Wellesley, complaining of wounds received by an accidental shot while on duty at Roundtown, Rathfarnham, County Dublin, on the night of 8 September 1823, and requesting issue of a pension, 8 February 1825. Also encloses memorial from Dougherty, watchman, 2nd division of police, to Wellesley, complaining of accidental damage to his foot sustained while on duty in April 1821, and requesting issue of a pension, 10 February 1825.
