Letter from Major Thomas Powell, Corkagh, Rathcoole, County Dublin, inspector general of the Leinster police constabulary, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, reporting on an application from John Cully, former sub constable of Birr, King's County [County Offaly], for payment of lodging costs dating back to the years 1821 and 1822. Stresses his objection to payment of such an allowance to Cully on grounds that accommodation was provided for the men in barracks. Observes the applicant made no previous claim for such costs and was earlier ‘reported as being disorderly, and insubordinate…but before he was brought before the Magistrates resigned his appointment, fearing punishment’, 5 April 1825. Also letter from William Henderson, chief constable of King's County, Edenderry, to Powell, conveying that barrack accommodation was provided for Cully ‘but being married, he was allowed…to sleep out of it, at his own request, as a matter of indulgence’, 29 March 1825. Also letter from Cully to Gregory, asserting claim for payment of Stg£7 16s towards his lodging while employed in the police establishment of King's County, 4 March 1825. Also memorial from Cully to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, seeking settlement of arrears and claiming the money is owed to him for a period of two years ‘previous to any Police Barracks been taken’ for use of the constabulary in Birr, 10 March 1825. |

Letter from the Chief Secretary’s Office, Dublin Castle, to Mathew Barrington, crown solicitor [Munster circuit], Dublin, requesting a report on the case of John Hogan a farmer of County Clare, who seeks recompense for his part in the rescue of a young girl named Catherine Hickey. With reply annotated on back of letter from Barrington, stating that the truth of Hogan’s statement will be more fully discovered at the next assizes; remarks ‘I don’t think he ought to [be] rewarded’. Also copy memorial of Hogan, Ballyloughmane, Ennis, County Clare, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Vice regal lodge, Phoenix Park, Dublin, complaining of an injury received during the rescue of Hickey who was abducted by a party of men. Claims that the leader of the assailants ‘Holland’, was detained and brought before the police and that a further member of the party, Michael Gavin, was later apprehended. Also refers to a similar defence of a girl in an attempted kidnapping, some 10 years previously, in which he took an instrumental part. |

Letter from Edmund Madden, Kilkenny, County Kilkenny, to James Wandesford Butler, 1st marquis of Ormonde, [Kilkenny Castle, County Kilkenny], making application on behalf of a ‘poor old man’ for payment of a pension in recognition of past loyalty. Recounts the person in question [unnamed] put his life at risk by resisting a rebel approach to join in the burning of the city of Kilkenny and taking of arms from the barracks there, in May 1798. Conveys, as a result of information supplied by him, the alarm was raised and the yeomanry dispatched to defend the access roads leading to the city. Remarks without his exertions of loyalty ‘many lives would have been lost’ as was the case in County Carlow. |
