Petition of the inhabitants of the Church of Ireland parish of Derrybrusk, County Fermanagh, requesting intervention to prevent their intended new church being placed on a distant site

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Petition of the inhabitants of the Church of Ireland parish of Derrybrusk, diocese of Clogher, County Fermanagh, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting intervention to prevent their intended new church being placed on a distant site due to pressure from a nearby member of the gentry. Alleges their rector, Reverend George Harris, has fell under the influence of a local landed gentleman who wishes the new place of worship to be located ‘contiguous to his Castle and Demesne’. Despite having earlier agreed with the two church wardens and a majority of the parishioners that the old church site should be utilised, Harris, they claim, has changed his mind about the location of the proposed church ‘under pretence…of removing it from floods, which…rise upon the road in the winter season’. Remarks the intended replacement building has the sanction of the bishop of Clogher [Robert Tottenham Ponsonby Loftus]. Signed by John Beatty, church warden, and 40 other parishioners.
