Letter from [Archibald] Hamilton, magistrate, Mount Barnard, Castlederg, [County Tyrone], noting that within the previous four months twelve females came before him swearing themselves pregnant by particular individuals and ‘erroneously supposing that by so doing they can recover from the Father, after the birth of the child, a reasonable sum for its support’. Adding that mothers are forced to become mendicants and a burden on the parish while ‘the most guilty person escapes unpunished either in purse or person’.

Includes correspondence between H Townsend, secretary to Commissioners of Irish Fisheries, Irish Fishery Office and Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary and William Gregory, Under Secretary concerning the expiration of the Fishery Acts and the subsequent lack of legal powers to prosecute offenders and discussing solutions to the difficulty. Also letter from J C Beresford, 26 Hardwicke Street, [Dublin] and reply from Dublin Castle informing him that ‘the Penalties under the Fishery Act are not now leviable’. Also letter from [Charles] Grant, to [Henry] Goulburn informing him of his intention to draft a bill which would ‘continue the Irish Fishery Bill’ and requesting Townsend to submit the wording of a clause for insertion. Also legal opinion from John Franks, 9 March, on the legal powers vested in the government and the Commissioners of Fisheries. Also extract from a letter from Alex Brand, secretary to the proprietors of inland fisheries in Ireland, to Mr Balington, reporting on the policing of salmon fishing in counties Sligo and Limerick. Adding that they operate a dispensary and two schools.
