Affidavit of Edward Reynolds, farmer and agent, Guilford, County Westmeath, claiming that he received threats while attempting to collect tithes due to Rev John Usher of Guilford in the parishes of Ballymore, Bunown, Forgney and Noughaval, [counties Westmeath and Longford]; seeking police or military assistance. Letter from N Fitzhenry, Chief Constable, Roscommon, to Maj Warburton, Inspector General, Ballinasloe, [County Galway], complaining that Capt Taafe, magistrate, ordered Constable McDonnell, officer in charge of Four Mile House, to attend at Strokestown Fair, [County Roscommon] without first informing him; claiming that Taafe ‘arrogantly’ informed him at the Petty Sessions that he would do so again if necessary. Also covering letter from Warburton, Dublin, to Sir William Gosset, [Under Secretary], includes legal opinion of Richard W Greene noting that a magistrate should channel his requests through a chief constable in the normal course of events but that this may be dispensed with in cases of emergency. Letter from Bryan McMahon, to Sir William Gosset, [Under Secretary], noting that both he and his brother, Patrick McMahon, will accept positions in the police but would prefer positions in the waterguards outside of County Clare; drawing attention to their plight, having lost their farm and all they own; adding that his aged father would accept £20 in order to emigrate. Also letter from M Singleton, Tolerton House, [County Carlow], to Gosset, noting that he has a vacancy in his Peace Preservation Police establishment for McMahon. Also damp press letters from Gosset, to Singleton and [Sir John Harvey], noting that the McMahon’s have received recommendations from the magistrates of the neighbourhood of [Kilelahan], County Clare; observing that they have been appointed to the Leinster Constabulary.

File of letters arising from reports from CH Tuckey, Sub-Inspector, Kilkenny, concerning two of his sub-constables who have left the force without leave in order to join the army.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Copies of letters from CH Tuckey, Sub-Inspector, Kilkenny, to Sir John Harvey, Inspector General, Dublin, concerning the case of Sub-constable Fluellan who quit the constabulary without taking leave in order to join the [6th Dragoon Guards] for which he has been sentenced to three months imprisonment by Col Osborne; adding that having enlisted, Fluellan returned to Castlecomer and ‘strutted’ round the town in his carbineers uniform and suggesting that he may have been sent ‘as a sort of crimp’ to entice other policemen to enlist, which, if successful, would leave the force with ‘only the Lilliputians of the district’; reporting that Robert Dalton, sub-constable also enlisted in the Carabineers having smashed his carbine in a fit of intoxication. Also covering letters from Harvey, to Sir William Gosset, [Under Secretary], commenting on the cases and his correspondence with Capt Hay, commending the Carbineers at Kilkenny; observing that he has always facilitated his men who wish to join the army as this will enable the army to procure a ‘better class of man than they can expect to get by the ordinary means’; observing that in nearly all cases the police service is regarded as too good a position to be resigned or exchanged for another position. Letter from Rev Charles H Crookshank, Tehallon, Monaghan, [County Monaghan], to Sir William Gosset, [Under Secretary], observing that he has received none of the tithes due to him due to opposition and has decided to await the decision of parliament on the matter; enclosing a copy of a threatening notice [extant] and observing that a meeting is to be held in the chapel in order to refute any allegation that his family were threatened; noting that the catholic priest of the parish suggested to him that the ‘Protestants of the neighbouring Parish of Monaghan’ must have written the letter. Includes copy of the anonymous letter signed ‘A Steadfast Protestant No Surrender’ warning Crookshank of a plot to kill him should he attempt to take out a decree for tythes at the petty sessions.
