Letter from Arthur Irwin Kelly, John Winder and William W Algeo, magistrates of County Armagh, Armagh, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, wishing to know if it is permissible to grant bail to eight individuals who have been arrested on the charge of burning the altar at the catholic church in the parish of Fartaraghan; noting that those arrested have excellent character references and that some of their accusers have received ‘questionable reports’. Includes annotation from William Plunkett, Attorney General, expressing doubt that the offence could been deemed a felony under current legislation. Also joint affidavit of Edward Campbell, William Courtney and John Douay, sworn before the magistrates, identifying individuals whom they allege burned the altar in the townland of Clonmacash and listing the twelve men who are in custody. Letter from J Bayer, Bantry, [County Cork], to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, complaining about the lack of law and order in Bantry, blaming the non-residency or disengagement of local magistrates and the absence of a petty session’s court. Reporting on a recent riot in the town between two factions and the subsequent meeting of the respectable inhabitants which was not attended by the magistrates. Also copy of resolution agreed to at the meeting and a letter addressed to [Richard White, 1st Earl of Bantry] and Simon White, magistrates, demanding action.

Letter from John Busteed, postmaster, Tralee, [County Kerry], to Richard Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, providing an eyewitness account of riots which accompanied the parliamentary election in Tralee which resulted in fatalities. Noting that a body of police had been assembled by Maj Mullins and George Rowan, magistrates, in order to protect the freeholders of [William Mullins, 2nd Baron Ventry] who arrived in the town to vote for [William] Hare. Stating that the ‘mob of this town’ who are supporters of Col Crosbie and O’Connell had threatened to attack them. Adding that Col Crosbie is reported to have later ‘flogged’ Lord Ennismore [William Hare, 1st Earl of Listowel].

Noting that he has prosecuted to conviction individuals involved in the same activities. Initially requesting that Patrick Harding be granted a pardon in return for his testimony but noting in a later letter that Harding has provided false information. Enclosing statements from Connor Luxton and Owen Healey and noting that Luxton has provided the names of those who murdered Egan and Petit. Includes annotation recommending a course of action.
