File of documents concerning the reporting and subsequent investigation of a violent attack on the home of George Longworth of Craggan, [Athlone, County Westmeath] by a gang of armed men during which Francis Longworth was stabbed with a pike and one of the gang killed. Includes copy of letter from Maj Gen J Taylor, Athlone, to the Military Secretary, Royal Hospital, reporting on the attack and noting that the individual killed was a local man called Clark. Also letters from [?], Sovereign’s Office, Athlone, to William Gregory, Under Secretary and Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, concerning information sworn by John McManus, a man of the ‘worst character’; adding that ‘it is not from respectable persons that evidence in such cases is to be obtained’. Also letters from Lieut Col DJ Osborn, Killucan, noting that those arrested for the attack have refused to accept bail offered to them; noting the absence of evidence against them but adding that he strongly suspects a number of them; hoping that McManus will provide information against the gang. Letter from [?], chief constable, Moate, [County Westmeath], to Osborn, concerning bail being offered to suspects. Claiming that three farmers sons are the leaders of the conspiracy and offering to bring them to Dublin. Asking that correspondence be directed to him care of Abbott [?Devero]. Includes annotation recommending that the men be brought to Dublin.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

File of documents concerning a heated dispute between the Martin and Blake families of Dangan, [County Galway], over a right of way through an estate which resulted in violence. Includes letter from AC Martin, Dangan, addressed to ‘My dear Menick’, stating that Col Blake lays claim to a right of way through Dangan and has encouraged his tenants to engage in acts of violence; claiming that the magistrates will not assist him; requesting that a body of constables be stationed in the area; providing an account of a confrontation along a river bank during which green flags bearing the inscription ‘Liberty’ were displayed and noting that Thomas Blake, son of [Valentine Blake] was amongst the crowd on the ‘Menlo side’. Also letter from Elizabeth M Martin, Dangan, [probably to Richard Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant], requesting a constabulary guard for the protection of her house as she has been intimidated by Mr Blake’s tenants. Also copy of the ‘Galway Independent Paper’, dated 13 May 1826, printing correspondence between Elizabeth Martin and Valantine Blake concerning their dispute and also noting that the dispute was settled prior to a duel being fought between A Martin and Thomas Blake.

Letter from Brig Maj Gen Daniel Mahony, Killarney, [County Kerry], to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, reporting that the high sheriff [of Kerry] was forced to call out the military in Tralee and that six individuals were killed. Claiming that he has heard from Captain Ferguson, that the officer commanding the soldiers had been reluctant to order his men to fire and suggesting that the magistrates who ordered the military to fire could have allowed their feelings to be controlled. Warning of the prospects of a poor potato harvest.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Rev Charles Moore, magistrate, Monasterevin, [Queens County or County Laois], to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, reporting that crowds of individuals from neighbouring districts are gathering on the sabbath [Sunday] to engage in wrestling, that illegal drinking in an unlicensed house also takes place and suggesting that these events are a pretext for illegal meetings. Includes extensive annotation noting that there is legislation prohibiting game-playing on Sundays but that it is rarely acted upon and that it is not an issue for government to meddle in. Also further letter from Moore, claiming that the wrestling is a mere pretext and that individuals of a more respectable class appear to use the occasion to hold meetings and that many strangers are present. Noting as curious that certain protestants were restricted from attending the event. Also letter from Henry Acheson, constable, to Moore, reporting on his inspection of the event.

Letter from [Stephen Moore, 3rd earl] Mount Cashell, Moore Park, [County Cork], to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, seeking government protection for John Lanigan who has provided information against Denis Duggan of Cashel who is accused of murdering Edward Murphy, one of Moore’s tenants residing at Ballinamona, County Tipperary. Noting that Lanigan is under police protection in Fermoy but that it would be safer if he was moved to Dublin. Includes copy of the affidavit sworn to by Lanigan recounting how he came across the armed gang shortly after the murder.
