Letter from A Crosley, chief constable, Castlekevin, Mallow, [County Cork], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, providing an eyewitness account of a foiled attack made on the house of Mrs Lombard at Eastly Cottage. Stating that he shot and killed Richard Thornhill, that a man called Magner has reportedly died from wounds and that the gang were also responsible for an attack on Mr FitzGibbon’s house at Broomhill. Noting that they had been forewarned of the attack by John Murphy, but that Lord Doneraile can better judge what compensation is owed to him. Also letter from Murphy, Mallow, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, seeking compensation and noting that he had received information on the planned robberies from John Hennessy, ‘an associate of the notorious Hickey’. |
