Letter from Bartholomew Warburton, magistrate, Crinkill Lodge, Parsonstown, [Kings County] [Birr, County Offaly], to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, reporting that a man named Doyle was badly beaten during the daytime in a public place close to the town; adding that he has arrested a man called [Porlon] for refusing to disclose who the perpetrators are; noting that in a separate case a man named Carrol refuses to give evidence against individuals who attacked a house in the area despite being confined to jail since early November; seeking advice on the legality of the detentions. Includes legal opinion of William Plunkett, [Attorney General], noting that magistrates are not justified in committing any person to prison merely for refusing to give evidence before them and advising Warburton to enter into recognizance to prosecute and then commit the witness if he refuses to attend the court case.
