Letter from Edward Ring, Quartermaster of the North Cork Militia, Fermoy, requesting the award of concordatum money to his daughter, Ann Ring, for her part in defeating an armed party of insurgents at the family home in 1823

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Edward Ring, Quartermaster of the North Cork Militia, Fermoy, to William Lamb, Chief Secretary, stating that in 1823, he, as well as his eldest daughter and son, defeated an armed party of insurgents who attacked the family home, killing some of them and causing the others to retreat. Claims he subsequently received a letter of thanks from Richard Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, and all the noblemen and magistrates in the area. He was awarded £100, his son was appointed as chief constable of police, and his daughter’s name, Ann Ring, was placed on the concordatum list. Requests that she now be granted money from the concordatum fund, as she has no other means of support. [See also CSO/RP/1827/2158].

Letter from [Sir] Richard [Henry] Willcocks, Inspector General of Police [in Munster], Cashel, [County Tipperary], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, returning memorial of subconstable Morgan Ryan, Cashel, to [Richard Wellesley], Lord Lieutenant, seeking the return of 8s withheld from his monthly pay for drilling. Willcocks states that he has interviewed Ryan, who has denied any connection to such a memorial, and that he has no doubt ‘that the document is fabricated, and forged, and if I can discover the author… I will not fail in reporting him to you, with a view that he may be punished as he deserves.’

Also memorandum from George and John Grierson, ‘Dublin Gazette’ Office, stating that the ‘Waterford Chronicle’ ceased business on 24 February 1827, that no government advertisements had been issued to its successor, and that the only Waterford newspaper on their list is the ‘Waterford Mail’. Also draft letter of reply from the Chief Secretary's Office to Farrell informing him of same.
