TITLE:

File of papers relating to letter from Dr John Dungan, Castleconnell, seeking remuneration for attending Catherine Gorman nee Madden

SCOPE & CONTENT:

File of papers relating to letter from Dr John Dungan, Castleconnell, [County Limerick], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, seeking remuneration and enclosing certificate signed by County Clare magistrates Samuel Bindon and [Sir Hugh Dillon] Massy [2nd Baronet of Summer Hill], testifying that he was required to attend 35 times to Catherine Gorman nee Madden over a period of 7 days, when she was ‘violated, by six persons, at Ardnacrusha… on the night of the 30th Dec[embe]r last’. Covering note by Gregory, indicating that he does not feel that Dungan should be reimbursed, as the magistrates promised him payment on behalf of the crown without first consulting with the Chief Secretary's Office. Subsequent annotation by Richard Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, stating that while the magistrates should have contacted the office immediately, he feels that the order was ‘indispensable’. Additional letter from Dungan to Gregory, expressing his gratitude to the Lord Lieutenant, having received the first halves of notes amounting to the sum of £25, and requesting the remainder.
