Letter from Dr Edward Trevor, [superintendent and medical inspector of convicts], Dublin, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, seeking advice in relation to the propriety of allowing convicts bound for transportation to carry money given to them by friends, sometimes in large sums of £100-£200. States that currently, this money is given to the charge of the surgeon superintendent or master of the ship for the remainder of the journey, and recommends that if money is to be carried, that it be sealed in the box containing the ship’s manifest.
