SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Maj [Thomas] Powell [chief magistrate of police], Corkagh, Rathcoole, [County Dublin], to William Lamb, Chief Secretary, enclosing letter from Dr William Wallace, Tullamore, [County Offaly], to Lamb, suggesting that a large quantity of gunpowder be moved to Tullamore, as lightning had struck the store in the constabulary house at Ballycumber during a storm the previous night and caused an explosion. Additional letter from J Smith, John Butcher, W [?William] Booth, S Thomas and [] Brown, Office of Ordnance, Dublin, to Lamb, denying request outlined in enclosed letter from Powell to Lamb – Powell states that Wallace and the chief constable of police had a ‘providential escape’ from the explosion in Ballycumber, and seeks permission to move ammunition from police stations to the nearest magazine.
