Adding that Doolan, a catholic, threatened to throw him ‘over the Battlements of the Bridge’ when confronted. Noting that he has been a member of the yeomany since 1796. |

Letter from Dan [Daniel] Clanchy, magistrate, Charleville, [County Cork], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, complaining that Mr Maxwell, magistrate, summoned a force of military and police to a public gathering arranged to celebrate the election of Daniel O’Connell in County Clare. Claiming that Maxwell did not consult him and that his motivation was ‘Political and Religious Hostility’ and also that the military commander refused to take notice of his instructions despite his holding the office of magistrate. Concluding that Maxwell’s actions were designed to interrupt what was a harmonious event and were contrary to the recommendation of government. Includes annotation stating that, based upon Clanchy’s account, Maxwell’s conduct was injudicious. |
