Letter from Gerald Fitzgerald, Chief Magistrates of Police, Cashel, [County Tipperary], to Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Gosset, Under Secretary, reporting an attack on the dwelling of John Ryan in the vicinity of Dundrum by a large mob comprised of persons of both sexes; stating they broke the windows, stripped the thatch, and fired ‘several shots’ at the inhabitants; adding the mob finding they could not gain access set the building alight; observing that three occupants made their escape thorough the flames; noting the reason for the attack was based on a presumed ‘right of property’ and adding he anticipates bringing the majority of the culprits to justice.

Includes letter from Roberts to the Chief Secretary’s Office, stating he is the incumbent of the union of Mothell, County Kilkenny, and complaining of the ‘foul conspiracy’ amongst the lower orders against settlement of tithe debts; lamenting the people are ‘ordered by their Priests not to pay’ and calling for the imposition of a military force to aid collection; also noting the baneful influence of Dr [James Warren] Doyle. Also includes letter from Roberts to the Chief Secretary’s Office, lamenting at the behaviour of Capt [Thomas] Woodcock, who apparently goes unchallenged in ‘leading mobs of Hurlers’ in opposition to the laws of the country; asking why he is still in receipt of half pay? Also includes affidavit of Thomas Bassett and John Rose, County Carlow, recounting the opposition shown by the peasantry to their work as valuators for the Rev Richard Boyle Bernard, Rector of Shankill, County Kilkenny; stating they were defied by Daniel Maher who depreciated the Protestant clergy and threatened to ‘throw out his tithe’; complaining that following valuation of Maher’s farm they were accosted by a mob of persons who ‘took from them their Books, & tore out the observations they had entered’; adding the mob ‘searched their Pockets for further documents’ and stoned them on their departure, through which they were ‘severely injured’; sworn before William Richard Stewart, magistrate.

Letter from James Rodford, Commander, ‘HMS Nimrod’, off Kildysart, [County Clare], to [Maj] George Warburton, Inspector General of Police [in Connaught], discussing the possibility of removing the ‘Nimrod’ to Galway Bay, County Galway, to aid the restoration of law and order in that vicinity; adding that his own official jurisdiction has been extended by his having been conferred to the commission of the peace for counties Clare and Limerick. Also letter from Rodford, Foynes Island, Shanagolden, [County Limerick], to Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Gosset, Under Secretary, offering some thoughts on preventing further turbulence amongst the fishermen of Claddagh in County Galway; stating he has sent Captain Glascock with the sloop ‘Orestes’ to the region in question; adding that application will be made to the Admiralty to have a small vessel stationed in that bay, and in addition, aid has been called for by the local coast guard ’to take such steps…to prevent a recurrence of such illegal and vexatious conduct for the future’.
