Includes copy of letter from Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, to Grierson and Keane dated 31 January 1827, informing them of the proposed changes as it would require an increase in printing production. Also letter from Grierson and Keane to [Goulburn], informing him that Charles Grant, then Chief Secretary, had considered a similar plan, but thought better of it on ‘mature consideration’, and outlining a number of observations on the subject. |

Letter from Dr Edward Trevor, [superintendent and medical inspector of convicts], Dublin, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, relating to conditions for prisoners aboard the convict hulk ‘Essex’. Claims that ‘protracted confinement’ in such conditions leads to ‘great discomfort, turbulent and riotous conduct’, as well as outbreaks of disease, and requests that convicts not be admitted to the hulk ships until a date has been set for their transportation. Encloses abstract from the journal of the Keeper of the ‘Hulk Essex’, John Lamb, recording 229 men on board, 159 of whom were employed in various tasks, and containing copy of Report of Prisoners in Hospital on Board the Hulk Essex, detailing their name, nature of their disease and when admitted, 12 December 1826. States that Ireland has had ‘ill fortune to have my Lord Wellesley placed at the head of its Government’, and urges him to look more favourably on the memorials and petitions of the distressed poor ‘before it is too late’. |
