File of papers relating to the transfer of prisoner Roger Murphy, Fonghall, County Armagh, to England, on a charge of stealing 27 black cattle in Yorkshire to the value of £30, property of Stephen McEvoy, also of Fonghall. Includes letters from William Kemmis, [crown solicitor], Kildare Street, Dublin, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, and William Gregory, Under Secretary, relating to the apprehension and committal of Murphy, as well as his subsequent ‘rescuing himself’ from the custody of the Armagh magistrate, Trevor Corry. Encloses copy of original affidavit detailing the crime, dated 28 October 1826, with annotation giving legal opinion of Richard W Greene, 25 January 1827. Also letter from Henry Hobhouse, [Under Secretary of State for the Home Office, and Keeper of State Papers], Whitehall, [London], to Gregory, stating that because the prosecutors are resident in England, nothing further can be done ‘this side [of] the channel’ until Murphy is conveyed to England.
