SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from chief magistrates Frederick Darley, John C Graves, Henry Charles Sirr and John Tudor, Head Office of Police, Dublin, to William Lamb, Chief Secretary, outlining their report in relation to enclosed letter from William Elliot Hudson, secretary, Mendicity Institution, Usher’s Ireland, [Dublin], to Lamb, requesting that the police be instructed to ‘take charge of such sturdy vagrants as may appear in the streets; and be enabled to confine them, when convicted, in a place to be appropriated by law to that special purpose.’ Additional copy of report by Chief Constable Michael Farrell, Head Office of Police, to the chief magistrates, stating that the city foot patrol currently consists of 100 men divided into 6 squads, each under the charge of a peace officer of the Head Police Office, and outlining the various tasks they are assigned. Also outlines a total of 8374 mendicants taken up by police between 1825 and 12 December 1827.
