Letter from Henry Hobhouse, [Under Secretary of State for the Home Office, and Keeper of State Papers], Whitehall, [London], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, enclosing copy of letter he received from Joseph Planter, Foreign Office, and copy of its enclosure, namely a letter from Prince Esterházy [Nikolaus II], Ambassador to the Emperor of Austria, Chandos House, to Prime Minister George Canning, relating to the death of Baron John Tyffe, who died at Vienna on 12 January 1826, and the proposed discharge of his debt of 700 florins [written in French]. States that Tyffe’s successor, Baron Jacques Tyffe, a Captain in the British Army, cannot be found on the army list, and indicates Tyffe owned property in Ireland. Subsequent letter from William Kemmis, crown solicitor, Kildare Street, [Dublin], to Gregory, informing him that despite investigations into Tyffe’s alleged family in Ireland, none could be found. Additional letter from L Sulivan [or Sullivan], War Office, to Gregory, enclosing second copy of Esterházy’s letter, and requesting him to enquire if either Jacques Esterházy or his sister, Jeanne Hill, are currently residing in Ireland. States similar enquires have been made in Scotland with no success. |
