Letters from JH Burke, Mayor of Galway, Galway, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, requesting protection for vessels laden with potatoes in the harbour, [?11] March 1827. Includes note by Gregory, asking permission to visit ‘the Admiral at Cork to send a vessel to the Bay of Galway’, signed by Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, and approved by Richard Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant. Also letter from Vice Admiral Robert Plampin, HMS ‘Semiramis’, Cork Harbour, to Gregory, stating that the fishermen of Galway were actively stopping the shipping of potatoes from the harbour; that one ship had been boarded and cut adrift; and that he would direct a vessel of war to protect the ships in Galway Bay, 16 March 1827. Additional letter from Burke to Gregory, informing him that the ship sent to protect the harbour had since been called away, 14 May 1827. |

Contains signed statements by Dr [?James] Ireland, Stephen’s Green, and Frederick Darley, John C Graves, Henry Charles Sirr and John Tudor, Head Police Office, testifying to McCartney’s character and stating that Henry died on 20 January from a fever contracted as a result of his attending to an accident involving the Galway mail coach at Chapelizod during a storm on 13 January. Also letter from Thomas Orde Lees, prosecretary, General Post Office, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, recommending donation of £10 [see also CSO/RP/1827/183]. |
