| SCOPE & CONTENT: |

Memorials of John Neville and John Grenville, publicans, seeking dismissal of a fine of £5 charged to each of them for selling alcohol on the Sabbath during the hours of divine service, and memorial of John Roche, butcher, stating that he was imprisoned for refusing to give evidence against Patrick Berney, who was also charged with selling alcohol on the Sabbath, or to pay a fine of £10, and seeking release. Neville and Grenville argue that they only sold alcohol to travellers to their premises, as permitted under the Excise Duties and Licences (Ireland) Act, 1815, while Roche stated that he later offered to testify against Berney, but this was refused. Roche’s memorial is certified by the arresting magistrate, Edward Keogh, Deputy Sovereign. Neville’s memorial is also accompanied by covering letter from Keogh, stating that he believes that his evidence is correct, and that he will not enforce the fine until Wellesley’s answer is received. |
