| TITLE: |
File of papers relating to petition of Margaret Fortune, Dublin, seeking payment of compensation due to her late husband, George Fortune, for damage to his property during the 1798 Rebellion |
| SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Letter from John Charles Herries, Treasury Chambers, [London], to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, enclosing petition of Margaret Fortune, 149 James’ Street, Dublin, to His Majesty’s Treasury, seeking compensation owed to her husband, George Fortune, before his death. States husband had rented his land in Enniscorthy, [County Wexford], from the Earl of Portsmouth [?John Wallop, 3rd Earl Portsmouth], and that £70 0s 6d was awarded to him in compensation for damage to his land and property during the 1798 Rebellion. Claims that he died on the day the order was issued to grant him compensation, and as such, this sum was never paid. Appears to have been a misunderstanding in Fortune’s request – includes draft letter [?from Goulburn] to William Gregory, Under Secretary, informing him that no allowance paid to George Fortune could be continued to his widow after his death, with an annotation stating that this was not her request, but merely that the above sum due to him on the day he died be paid to her now. Draft is annexed by wax seal to a letter from Fortune to Gregory, clarifying her request, 2 April 1827. |
