Memorial of Ferdinand Grey, Knockagay, Mohill, County Leitrim, to [Richard] Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, seeking protection of the law. States he is employed as a bailiff under Samuel T Potter, agent to the Rev William Beresford for the glebe lands of the parish of Cloone. Claims he attended at the home of Hugh Mitchell on 12 March 1827, to demand possession of his holding, where he was assaulted by the tenant’s sister, Mary Anne Mitchell, and his eviction notice destroyed. Requests redress of the Mitchells, without which ‘the precedent may render him unsafe in the future discharge of his duty’. Annotation on reverse giving legal opinion of Richard W Greene. |

Annotation on reverse by Richard Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, referring letter to the presiding judge, as well as legal opinion of Henry Joy, Solicitor General. Also letter from [James] McClelland, [Baron of the Court of Exchequer], Annaverna, [County Louth], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, stating that he was the presiding judge in the case against prisoner Patrick Punday, and recommending that an indictment be taken against the subsheriff ‘for the gross neglect of duty – I have never heard before of an instance of a capital execution taking place without the attendance of the Sheriff or Subsheriff’.
