Letter from [Lt Col] George Morris, Governor, House of Industry, Dublin, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, in complaint against Rev James Moncks, Roman Catholic Chaplain, for continued religious interference with children of the Established Church at the institution, enclosing copies of 2 documents sent to Moncks on 4 April 1827: firstly, a letter from William Abbott, Register of the House of Industry, warning him against further ‘religious warfare’; and secondly, an enclosed copy of 2 resolutions passed at a meeting of the Governors of the House of Industry, 21 January 1814, which indicated that ‘no child, of whatever religion, whether Protestant, Protestant Dissenter or Roman Catholic be permitted to change his or her religion, until they shall respectively attain the age of Sixteen years’, and that no chaplain was to attempt to initiate same. |

Letter from Denis [Moore], [?Clonmore], Castlebar, [County Mayo], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, enclosing letter from Isidore Blake, Chief Constable of County Galway, requesting a leave of absence until 1 May 1827. States that he did not apply for it in the usual way as Maj [George] Warburton, [Inspector General of Police in Connaught], was out of the country, and that he has arranged for Chief Constable Wright from the adjoining Barony to oversee his duties in the meantime. [Moore] states that Blake’s son has fallen ill with a fever and must be taken to London immediately. Annotated ‘granted’ by Richard Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, and orders that the ‘special nature of the case’ be communicated to Warburton. |

Memorial of William Lucas, Thomas Maguire and John Fisher, to [Richard] Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, stating that they have served for many years as collectors of tax for the Foundling Hospital, and seeking pension: £25 per annum for Lucas, aged 56 with 28 years’ service; £20 for Maguire, aged 54 with 19 years’ service; and £20 for Fisher, aged 77 with 18 years’ service. Claim that due to the declining economy their duty has become increasingly difficult in the preceding years and that their income is 10d to every £1 collected, scarcely giving them £60 per annum. Signed by 5 governors of the Foundling Hospital. Also covering letter from Maguire, 3 St Patrick’s South Close, [Dublin], to William Gregory, Under Secretary. Annotation on reverse calculating the rate of superannuation pension payable. |
