Letters from Rev Henry Stewart, Loughgilly, Newry, [County Armagh], to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, noting that 1014 protestants in his parish had signed a petition against emancipation, objecting to the taking of a census in the area by catholics, and transcribing correspondence with the catholic parish priest, Felix Connolly, who appointed the enumerators, and Lord Gosford [Archibald Acheson, 2nd Earl Gosford], Governor of the county, whose tenant was acting as an enumerator, 16-24 December 1826. Requests that the catholic census be stopped – however, annotation on reverse signed by Henry Joy, Solicitor General, and [William Plunket, Attorney General], stating that they know of ‘no law against this’. |

Memorial of Terence Murray, Farmer, Tattymore, County Fermanagh, requesting that a bail of £300 be set for his release preceding his trial. States that at a fair on 31 August 1826, Murray was accused by Patrick Cassidy of Drumyvale, County Monaghan, of purchasing sheep with a ‘bad note of the Bank of Ireland’. Claiming illiteracy, Murray states that he could not have known that the note was a forgery. Memorial contains 8 signatures testifying to Murray’s character, and a copy of information against Murray dated 20 December 1826. [Contains list of names not given in this description] |

Letter from Sir William Betham, Ulster King of Arms and All Ireland, Office of Arms, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, enclosing his report commanded by Richard Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, on the subject of the memorial of John Edmund DeBeauvoir, Connaught Place, Middlesex, to Richard Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant. Enclosed copy of memorial from DeBeauvoir to Wellesley stating that as the eldest son and heir apparent of Sir Edmond Browne, Johnstown, Dublin, who has made a knight [in 1798], he was entitled to apply for a knighthood, and requesting that, as he could not travel to Dublin, that this honour be inferred through patent alone and not through the usual means of the Lord Lieutenant’s sword. As DeBeauvoir has reached the age of 21 years, Betham states that he is entitled to apply for such a knighthood, but recommends that he travel to Dublin to receive this honour in person. Also enclosed copy of a patent dated 5 November [1817] conferring knighthood on James Little. |
