States he was arrested for an alleged assault on Patrick Murray, a Private in the 17th Regiment of Foot on the 20 May 1827. Encloses copy of affidavit signed by JH Burke, magistrate and Mayor of Galway, refusing to grant him bail. Annotation on reverse giving legal opinion of Richard W Greene stating that ‘this is a bailable offence and the magistrate had no right to refuse bail’.

States that he has been imprisoned for the past 3 months as he cannot afford the penalty; that he is sorry for breaking the law; and that he will ‘never do the like again’. Contains a certificate annexed to the memorial by wax seal, in testament to his character, signed by a justice of the peace, []. Additional letter from Hobson, Armagh Gaol, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, clarifying that he was fined for ‘carrying a gun and using a dog for the purpose of killing game he not being qualified… but from want of knowledge did so’.
