Letter from Dr Edward Trevor, [superintendent and medical inspector of convicts], Cove [Cobh], County Cork, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, referring to enclosed letter relating to overcharging for clothing supplied to convicts aboard the hulk ‘Essex’ at Kingstown [Dún Laoghaire] by the sheriffs of County Dublin, while 36 convicts were admitted aboard without waistcoats [not present]. Requests that the sheriffs me made to account for both this deficiency and the above ‘extravagant charges’. |

Letter from William Kemmis, Kildare Street, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, enclosing 2 documents: memorial of crown witness Dennis Byrne, Richmond bridewell, to Richard Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, stating he was admitted to Richmond bridewell following his testimony against Thomas Cullen and Peter Wade, who were since tried and sentenced to transportation for life, and seeking both his release and to be furnished with clothes and expenses to enable him to travel home; and subsequent letter from Robert Hamilton, crown solicitor on the north eastern circuit, to Messrs Kemmis and Carmichael, confirming that there is no further reason to detain Byrne. In light of Hamilton’s letter, Kemmis recommends Byrne for discharge. Annotation on reverse indicates Byrne was awarded with £5 towards his expenses. |
