Letter from Dr [John] Speer, Kingston [Dun Laoghaire], to William Lamb, Chief Secretary, recommending that two diseased prisoners, named John Doran and James Halfpenny, be removed from the convict hulk ‘Essex’ to the Cork Penitentiary House and observing that the benefit of removing such patients has been brought up at coroner’s inquests. Also letters from Edward Trevor, Cove [Cobh, County Cork], to Lamb, expressing surprise that Speer, surgeon of the hulk ‘Essex’ has made this application and noting that the ship has three fully equipped and provisioned hospital wards. Includes statement noting the numbers of prisoners committed on-board both the ‘Essex’ and the ‘Surprize’ and related expenses between 1823 and 1827. Also receipt from Isaac Sillcock, surgeon, Nenagh acknowledging £10 received for his attendance upon William Halloran who was severely wounded. Also covering letter from [Henry Prittie, 2nd Baron] Dunalley, magistrate, Kilboy [House], [County Tipperary], noting that he was chairman of the meeting of magistrates which considered ways to improve the course of law at quarter sessions and noting that there is a ‘great want of time for the Crown business’ and that over 100 trials remain to be heard despite the magistrates having sat for four days. Adding that one of Halloran’s attackers has been identified. Including annotation. |
