Memorial of John Dowd, 15 Chatham Street, [Dublin], to Edward Geoffrey Smith Stanley, Chief Secretary, requesting the assistance of government in ascertaining the reason for his suspension from his post of lamp inspector with the commissioners of paving; stating he was employed for a period of nine years but was suspended by Maj [Alexander] Taylor ‘without any charge’ being preferred against him. Also letter from Alderman Richard Smyth, Lieut Col George Morris and Hickman Kearney, Paving House [Corporation for Paving, Cleaning and Lighting the streets of Dublin], [22 Mary Street, Dublin], to Stanley, reporting the reason for Dowd’s removal is not mentioned in the official records relating to that incident which took place on 1st February 1815; commenting that since the introduction of gas lighting to the city the number of inspectors is just one, and consequently no vacancy exists through which the applicant might be reemployed; enclosing copy of minute ordering that Dowd be suspended from duty and ‘Barry’ be appointed in his stead.

Letter from Henry Wallis, Drishane Castle, Millstreet, [County Cork], to Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Gosset, Under Secretary, enclosing a memorial from the magistrates and resident landowners of counties Cork and Kerry to Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, emphasising the advantages of a new line of road between Castleisland in County Kerry and Millstreet in County Cork and requesting advance of funds for the completion of the project; stressing the benefits of the scheme, especially the potential for employing the lower orders ‘in a season of scarcity’; noting the road if completed would enable the ‘easy interchange of limestone and fuel’ and would reduce the distance from Cork to Tralee by ten miles; adding the road could be completion for the sum of £3800; signed by John Cooke Wallis, magistrate, and 15 others.
