File of documents containing applications from a number of policemen seeking payment of a disability or retirement allowance under the provisions of the Police Act. Includes memorial from Joseph Appleyard, police constable, Dublin, to Hugh Percy, [3rd Duke Northumberland], Lord Lieutenant, requesting issue of disability allowance on account of injuries received by falling off a wall, during a house fire, on Dame Street, in January 1829. Also includes memorial from John Cassidy, watchman, Dublin, to Percy, seeking extension of monetary assistance having spent 23 years in the police establishment; complaining he is ‘quite worn out and unfit for further service’. Also includes memorial from John Cottingham, watchman, Dublin, to Percy, asking for the aid of government under the provisions of the Police Act on account of a ‘severe Rheumatic affliction acquired in the performance of his Duty’. Also includes memorial from Thomas Talbot, watchman, Dublin, to Percy, complaining of being ‘worn out’ after near 40 years’ service as policeman in the city of Dublin and requesting monetary aid. Letter from Dominick Browne, [MP for County Mayo], Bilton Hotel, [Dublin], to Baron Twyll, [Private Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant], Dublin Castle, seeking to promote the construction of a road between Swineford in County Mayo and Ballaghaderreen in County Roscommon; stressing that such an undertaking would be of great benefit to the labouring poor of the baron of Costello, who would get much needed employment in the months of June and July when their stock of potatoes is low; anticipating the attention of civil engineers Alexander Nimmo and John Killaly and proposing laying the highway ‘as far as £2000 would go’. Enclosing copy memorial of the grand jurors and other inhabitants of County Mayo, to Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, requesting the advance of funds for completion of the road from the bridge of Lung [Ballaghaderreen] to Swineford; emphasising the economic advantages of making an unbroken connection between Dublin and the important seaport of Ballina and noting that the peasantry in the region are much distressed; claiming that the project would help to dampen ‘insurrectionary spirit’ and also serve to eliminate existing circuitous routes; also insisting that completion of the proposed road will open a passage for the more efficient delivery of post or mail to as many as eight market towns; signed by Sir William John Brabazon and 23 others.

Enclosing copy statement from Thomas Brennan, Sub-constable, alleging that on 2nd of June 1831 whilst in process of conveying a prisoner named Mathew Lynch to the guardhouse in the town of Mullingar, with Sub-constable John Kerr, he was ‘violently assaulted’ by someone in the assembled mob; indicating he pursued and apprehended the culprit, James Lynch, a brother of the prisoner; sworn before John Lyons, magistrate of County Westmeath; also corroborative statement overleaf from Daniel Tighe, Sub-constable.
