Petition signed by 23 inhabitants of Callan, [County Kilkenny], to Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, seeking government assistance to force the magistrates and clerk of the peace for County Kilkenny to hold a sessions court in Callan in order to register 400 inhabitants of that town to become electors. Noting that those occupying commonage lands and paying crown rent at Callan are being threatened by the nobility and magistrates who wish to eject them and to enclose the commonage. Noting that similar cases occurred at Carlingford and County Louth. Copy of letter from Rev John Vincent, chaplain, Paramatta, New South Wales, [Australia], to Dr Edward Trevor, Inspector General, reporting in strong terms on the scenes of ‘lewdness and abandoned profligacy’ during his voyage aboard the convict ship, ‘Elizabeth’, on its voyage carrying female convicts from Cobh to Australia; noting that the superintendent, Mr Hughes, did not intervene to stop the behaviour and also claiming that his possessions, larder and livestock were stolen. Also covering letter from Trevor, to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, concluding that the surgeon superintendent did little to attend to discipline on the voyage. |
