Letter from Piers Geale, crown solicitor, 12 Mountjoy Square, [Dublin], to the Chief Secretary's Office, referring to the case of James King, an approver confined in Carlow Gaol; stating he should be transferred to Kilmainham [County Dublin] for his own protection and adding that an order should be sent to the gaoler [Robert McDowell] to that effect; also stating that he has had a communication from Lieut Col Daniel O’Donoghue, resident magistrate of police [Queen’s County; County Laois], concerning a riot at Ballinakill and requesting to learn whether a prosecution might be made or if the case is a ‘fit one’ to be pursued in a court of law. Enclosing affidavit of James King stating that on the 22nd of May he accompanied Stephen Neall and Michael Doolan to a field belonging to [William] John Thomson where he was forced to swear ‘on a Book’ to carry out particular acts of subversion; indicating that the pair approached him to go up to shoot Col Bruen [of Oakpark] which he refused, and again was later requesting to meet the gang at Graigue Bridge to burn the house of James Brennan which he prevented by giving opposition to those attempting the act of arson; sworn before William Fishbourne, magistrate, and endorsed overleaf by two other magistrates.

Letter from Robert Martin, [magistrate], Ross House, near Galway, [County Galway], to the chief secretary of the General Post Office, Dublin, complaining that Sir Edward Lees [secretary of GPO] failed to inform him of his intention to make a new contract for conveying the post between Galway and Oughterard; protesting that Lees did not give ‘fair play to the former Contractors Who have been at the Expense of a large Outlay for Cars and Horses’; explaining that some time back he proposed to Lees that the post could be more expediently carried by a by horse and car, andin 1826 he entered into a contract for that purpose, which he then sub-contracted to ‘two respectable men’.
