Letter from John R Bindon, Chief Constable, to Maj George Warburton, Inspector General, reporting on an incident which occurred at Ardnacrusha, [County Clare] whereby a crowd of people playing party tunes and shouting insults marched by the police barracks and were confronted by a small number of constables under Constable Kirwan; noting that the constabulary are conflicted between enforcing the recent proclamation against illegal gatherings and not becoming unnecessarily embroiled in confrontation. Also covering letter from Warburton, Castlegar, [County Galway], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, noting that threatening notices were displayed in Ballina warning catholics not to have any dealings with protestant shopkeepers who were members of the Brunswick Club and that a similar boycott has been placed on Mr Robinson’s distillery in Athlone. |
