Memorial of Rev John Graham, rector of [Tamlaghtard], Magilligan, [County Londonderry or County Derry], warning against an attempt to revive an Orange institution by certain individuals. Noting that he is the former Grand Chaplain of the Orangemen of Ireland and observing that the grand lodge of which he was a member was dissolved following legislation against secret societies but that certain individuals are again attempting to ‘draw out the protestant population into an illegal and dangerous association’. Enclosing an open letter from him addressed to the ‘Freemen and Freeholders of the City and County of Londonderry’ entitled ‘Late Orange Society’. Also newspaper clipping noting that Rev Sir Harcourt Lees acted as chairman of the meeting of the ‘Benevolent and Religious Orange Institution’. Also draft letter from an unidentified official, Dublin Castle, Graham, stating that Sir Harcourt Lees does not intend to attend the meeting to be held in Ballymena, [County Antrim]. |

Recounting how he has established a furnace business producing iron and employing up to 35 men but noting the difficulties faced by his industry. Noting that he is an emigrant from Ireland and mentioning a letter from William Saurin to WC Plunkett, Capt Carberry, the Geraghtys and a parting at Kilmainham. Adding that he remembers with gratitude that even in the worst of times he was treated by government ‘as well as [he] deserved’ and stating that he may sell his business and avail himself of the indulgence given by the Lord Lieutenant. |
