Noting that he was awarded the money following an attack on house by a gang in 1827 and noting that one of assailants, named Taylor, was shot by Sergeant Morris during a pursuit. Petition of Thomas Bateman, debtor at Cork Gaol, formerly of Rochfortstown, South Liberties of Cork city, to Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, stating that he has been in prison for nearly three years on account of a debt of £12 tythe money which is owed to Rev William Meade of Ballymoney. Claiming that Meade has refused his offer of instalments and that he has been denied recourse to the Insolvent Debtors Act. Also letter from John Lloyd, Insolvent Debtors Court, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, explaining the background to the case and enclosing an extract from the affidavit of Meade in that court, claiming that Bateman refused to give him possession of 15 acres of land at Castlewhite. Noting that Bateman can be discharged of his debt if he gives up possession. Includes draft reply to Bateman, from government. |
