Letters from George Ruth Reynolds, Magilligan, Coleraine, [County Londonderry or Derry], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, wishing to know if his name appears on the list of candidates for the position of chief constable. Also letters from Reynolds, to Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, recounting in considerable detail his efforts to be appointed and noting that the offspring of those who ‘wore pikes in 1798’ are being promoted before his race who were ‘wearing swords and sabres in defence of the Government’. Singling out the following ‘Papists’ - Capt Holohan, Lieut Kavanagh, Lieut O’Rioly and Lieut Sulivan and questioning if ‘Dan the Knights Liberator lets loose His Millions, will those officers stand in defence of the Government’. Also complaining of favouritism shown to ‘the Illegitimates of Noblemen and Gentlemen’, ‘Half Papists, the Mother generally of the lower order’.
