Noting that he served in the 32nd and 13th Regiment of Light Dragoons and as a lieutenant in the City of Limerick Militia and fought in the battle against the French commanded by Gen Humber at Killooney in 1798. Adding that both he and his father, Capt Daniel Hunt, commanded the Tuam Yeomanry. |

File of documents concerning an investigation into the behaviour of Peyton Shields, Chief Constable at Belturbet, County Cavan. Includes affidavit of Thomas Garrod, demanding an investigation of his charges against Shields, whom he accuses of keeping several private racehorses in the police stables where they were groomed by his sub constables, of being absent without leave and also of using police horses for private use. Also letter from Edward Tierney, crown solicitor, 15 Fitzwilliam Street, to Maj D’Arcy, stating that he will require government orders in order to defend Shiels in a case brought by John Griffith. Also letter from D’Arcy, Enniskillen, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, forwarding evidence taken by him during his investigation [extant] and noting that Garrod was a sub constable who was dismissed for improper conduct and concluding that Shields is a zealous officer. Also letter from Shields, to Viscount Forbes, Dublin Castle, stating that there is a conspiracy against him in his town on account of his actions in stopping an orange procession and that the same faction are assisting Garrod to press his charges. Also copies of certificates from magistrates certifying Shield’s good behaviour and statements from Rev George Belloffet; William Duncan; John Gilchrist, constable; Bernard Reilly, sub constable; Robert Jackson, sub constable; Thomas Gill. Also memorial of [Sheals], to Henry William Paget, 1st Marquess of Anglesey, Lord Lieutenant. Also memoranda from Anglesey [Paget], concluding that [Sheil’s] character has been upheld. File concludes with a draft letter from an unidentified official, Dublin Castle, to D’Arcy, confirming that Shiels can be reinstated but cautioning him to strictly abide by regulations in future. |
