SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Petition from William and Robert Burtchaell, churchwardens of the parish of Graig, County Kilkenny, to Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, complaining that Timothy Doyle, their resident magistrate has orchestrated a campaign of non-payment of church rates or tythes in their parish by claiming that ‘the people had no right to be taxed for the support of any sect’; also accusing him of persuading Sir Nicholas Loftus, magistrate not to investigate the matter; requesting an investigation and the removal of Doyle from the commission of the peace. Also an affidavit of William Burtchaell and covering letter from him to William Gregory, Under Secretary. Also letter from Doyle, Graige, to Hart, noting individuals who have recommended him and noting that the churchwardens’ affidavit was politically motivated and was sworn before Joseph Hayden, ‘a man of very middle rank’ and a very recent magistrate; also enclosing a resolution in praise of Doyle agreed by the Grand Jury. Also copy of letter from Anthony Hart, Lord Chancellor, to Doyle, drawing his attention to the charges levelled against him. Includes annotation from Henry Joy, Attorney General, noting that Doyle has declined to answer the charges but should be made to do so.
