Letter from Sir John Harvey, Inspector General of Police [for Leinster], Portarlington, [County Laois], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, forwarding letter from the Marquis of Ormonde [James Wandesford Butler, 1st Marquis of Ormonde], Kilkenny, to Maj [G] Browne [Subinspector for County Kilkenny], recommending that Subconstable Luke Flood be reinstated to the police, having previously been dismissed for misconduct. Additional letter from Harvey to William Gregory, Under Secretary, indicating that he has no objection to Ormonde’s request, as Flood’s ‘previous conduct is represented as having been so exemplary… [and he] has already been so severely punished for his offence’. File of letters relating to journey of Maj Gen Sir James Charles Dalbiac to Ireland to accompany the body of his wife [Susanna Isabella Dalbiac nee Dalton] home to England. Includes letters from: Dalbiac to Lt Gen Sir John [Byng, Commander in Chief of the Irish army], outlining his plans to cross from Liverpool [England] to Dublin aboard the Government Steam Packet, thanking him for his and his wife’s expressions of sympathy, and stating ‘I thank God that my only treasure keeps quite well’ [in apparent reference to his daughter, Susanna Stephenia Dalbiac]; Byng, Royal Hospital, Kilmainham, to unnamed recipient, asking him to comply with Dalbiac’s request ‘to accompany the Corpse of His Poor Wife to England’; Thomas Taylor, to unnamed recipient, stating that Sir Edward [Smith] Lees, secretary to the Irish Post Masters General, has approved Dalbiac’s passage aboard the steam packet, which will be ‘free of Expense’; Dalbiac to Byng, informing him that he will travel Monday evening [?1 February 1829], and stating that ‘I never dreamt of employing the Packet “free from expense”’, as stated in Taylor’s letter; and from Byng to unnamed recipient, confirming Dalbiac’s day of travel as the following Monday.
