SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Thomas Dunscombe, previous Mayor of Cork, to [Henry Paget], outgoing Lord Lieutenant, requesting that his son, Rev Nicholas Colthurst Dunscombe, be appointed as chaplain of the Cork Penitentiary, ‘in consequence of the Rev Mr Kenedy the now Chaplain having got a return of a Paralytick Stroke, which puts his recovery out of the question and renders him totally incapable of any kind of duty’. Also states that Kenedy will be paid an emolument of £50 per annum for the duration of his life.

Letter from Sir John Harvey, Inspector General of Police [for Leinster], Portarlington, [County Laois], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, forwarding 3 documents relating to reported repeated absences of Chief Constable Capt John Burke, Arthurstown, [County Wexford], namely: letter from Burke to Harvey, requesting permission to travel occasionally to Waterford to visit his ill wife and family; extract of letter from Capt Hamilton, Subinspector for County Wexford, to Harvey, indicating he has no objection to same; and extract of letter from Harvey to Hamilton, stating that he also has no objection, as long as the magistrates approve and that it does not interfere with his duties. Letter marked ‘immediate’ from Dr Francis Barker, secretary, General Board of Health, [Dublin], to William Gregory, Under Secretary, reporting that the board has just recently learned from the master of the Lying In Hospital ‘that Puerperal Fever has prevailed to an alarming extent in that establishment during the present month’, and referring to enclosed copy of report on puerperal fever submitted to the Lord Lieutenant [Charles Chetwynd Talbot], 23 December 1820. Also copy of letter from Gregory, forwarding preceding documents to the directors of the Lying In Hospital, and requesting a report on the current state of the epidemic as soon as possible.
