Letter from magistrate Andrew D Johnston, Friarstown, Dromahair, [County Leitrim], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, forwarding copy of letter he received from Thomas O’Brien, currently imprisoned at Carrick on Shannon Gaol awaiting transportation for life ‘in the case of McGarahan’, outlining his wish to convert to Protestantism, stating ‘I grieve to heart for not spending my time to the Benifit [sic] of the Constitution and living a member of the Astablished [sic] Church as I never in all my life to ofend [sic] or molest the Protestant Cause… Dear Sir I have been brought like a lamb to the Slaughter by an Ignorant race who new [sic] not the need of a Saviour’. Johnston states that O’Brien could offer information ‘which may lead to the discovery of the heads of alarming and well armed parties of nightly insurgents’. Annotation on reverse indicates enclosed affidavits removed [corresponding register entry notes names Kain, McGolrick and [?McSheery]].
